Trump warns Canada of China threat over missile defense system

The US president has warned that Canada risks being exploited by China if it refuses to cooperate with Washington on a proposed missile defense system in Greenland. In a statement on his social media platform, Donald Trump expressed concern that Canada’s opposition to the Golden Dome system could have significant consequences for the country’s security.

According to Trump, the Golden Dome system, inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome, would protect Canada, but Ottawa has chosen instead to pursue business deals with China. Trump believes that China’s growing influence in the region poses a threat to Canada’s interests and that the country should be grateful for US defense.

The proposed Golden Dome system is part of a broader plan by the US to increase its military presence in the Arctic region, which Trump claims is necessary to counter the influence of Russia and China. The US president has previously threatened to annex Greenland from Denmark, citing the strategic importance of the region.

Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has pushed back against Trump’s claims, stating that his country’s success is not solely dependent on the US. Carney argued that the current world order, based on “American hegemony,” is undergoing a significant shift. Trump responded to Carney’s remarks by disinviting him from his newly formed ‘Board of Peace’, a body aimed at resolving global conflicts.

China has denied any attempts to undermine the interests of other countries in the Arctic region. A Foreign Ministry spokesman stated that the so-called “China threat” is baseless and that China opposes the fabrication of narratives aimed at seeking selfish gains.

The dispute highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the Arctic region, where multiple countries are vying for influence and resources. As the US, China, and Russia continue to expand their military presence in the region, the potential for conflict and competition is increasing. The outcome of the US-Canada dispute over the Golden Dome system will be closely watched, as it has significant implications for regional security and the balance of power in the Arctic.
