APC Opens Door to Kano Governor’s Defection

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has expressed willingness to welcome Governor Abba Yusuf if he decides to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). According to the party’s chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, the APC is open to accepting any politician who wishes to join its ranks, as the party believes that strength in numbers is crucial in politics.

Abbas stated that the APC would not reject any addition to its membership, as this would contribute to the party’s success in future elections. He emphasized that the party’s position on welcoming new members has always been clear, and that it would continue to do so as long as the individual has seen the benefits of joining the APC.

Regarding concerns about automatic tickets for defectors, Abbas noted that this issue is premature and would be addressed once the defection process is complete. He also revealed that Governor Yusuf would not be defecting alone, as several elected local government chairmen, councilors, and other political office holders are expected to join the APC with him.

Abbas explained that discussions on strategy would take place after the defection process is finalized, with the goal of mapping out a plan that would benefit all members. The party’s primary focus, according to Abbas, is on winning the 2027 elections. He expressed confidence that the APC would work out a modality to ensure the success of the party, without any crisis between old and new members.

Abbas also addressed reports of delays in the governor’s defection, dismissing them as rumors. He pointed out that a governor’s defection involves careful steps and processes, which must be followed and completed before the defection can be considered official.

The potential defection of Governor Yusuf to the APC is significant, as it could impact the political landscape in Kano State and beyond. The APC’s willingness to welcome the governor and other defectors reflects the party’s strategy to build strength and increase its chances of success in future elections. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the APC’s efforts to attract new members will play out in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
