The Nigerian House of Representatives has addressed concerns over alleged alterations to tax reform laws, with the release of Certified True Copies (CTCs) of the legislation. According to Deputy Spokesperson Hon. Philip Agbese, the move has resolved issues surrounding discrepancies in the gazetted tax laws and restored public confidence in the legislative process.
An interim report by the Minority Caucus Ad-hoc Committee had earlier suggested that changes were made to the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, with at least three different versions in circulation. The report pointed to procedural anomalies that may have encroached on the National Assembly’s legislative powers. However, Agbese argued that the leadership of the National Assembly, in collaboration with the Senate, has taken decisive steps to address these concerns.
The House, under the leadership of Speaker Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, and the Senate, led by President Senator Godswill Akpabio, have ensured the public release of authentic versions of the four tax reform Acts. The release of the CTCs has provided clarity on the laws passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by the President. Agbese noted that the Speaker has also initiated an internal verification process to ensure that only authentic versions of the laws are in circulation.
The proactive measures taken by the National Assembly demonstrate its commitment to transparency, due process, and the protection of democratic institutions. Agbese acknowledged the right of lawmakers to raise concerns but maintained that the corrective measures already implemented have made further controversy unnecessary. The House has acted swiftly and responsibly, releasing the Certified Acts to guide Nigerians and prevent any confusion.
The incident highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in the legislative process. The National Assembly’s swift response has reaffirmed its independence and authority, while also showcasing the collaboration between the House and the Senate in safeguarding their constitutional roles. The House of Representatives has assured Nigerians that it will continue to work with relevant institutions to strengthen legislative processes and prevent similar issues in the future. With the release of the Certified True Copies, the matter has been settled, and Nigerians can now rely on the correct and lawful versions of the tax reforms.
