A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mrs Foluke Osafile, has formally defected from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress. The lawmaker, who represents Amuwo-Odofin Constituency I, confirmed her move on Saturday, stating that she had joined the African Democratic Congress. According to Osafile, her decision to defect was driven by a desire to better serve her constituents and improve their future prospects.
Osafile, who was elected to her seat in 2023 under the Labour Party platform, pledged to work closely with the leaders of her new party to promote effective governance and strengthen democratic institutions. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that the voices of ordinary Nigerians are heard and respected, underscoring her commitment to representing her constituents’ interests.
The lawmaker’s defection comes after a tumultuous period, during which her election victory was initially overturned by a tribunal. However, the Court of Appeal later restored her victory, bringing an end to the legal contest. Osafile reassured her constituents of her loyalty, stating that their trust remained her guiding principle.
The formal announcement of Osafile’s defection is expected to take place during a plenary session in the coming days. As a member of the African Democratic Congress, she is likely to play a key role in shaping the party’s legislative agenda and advocating for the interests of her constituents. The development is significant, as it reflects the ongoing dynamics of party politics in Nigeria, where lawmakers frequently switch allegiances in pursuit of their political goals. With her defection, Osafile is poised to continue her legislative work under the banner of her new party, with a focus on promoting good governance and serving the needs of her constituents.
