Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has unveiled plans to enforce a state law prohibiting extravagant pre-wedding activities, citing the rising costs of marriage as a significant factor deterring young people from getting married. The announcement was made during the commissioning of the remodelled Zawiyatu Sheikh Aliyu Bunza Jumu’at Mosque and Islamiyya School in Sokoto.
According to Governor Aliyu, the high costs associated with wedding ceremonies are a result of some families’ demands for expensive events, which place a substantial financial burden on couples. This, in turn, contributes to the increasing number of unmarried men and women in the state. The governor noted that the law, aimed at regulating wedding expenses, has been frequently flouted by some parents and guardians, prompting the government to engage with stakeholders to review the regulations and ensure compliance.
The high cost of marriage is a pressing concern, as it may drive some young people to engage in immoral behavior, Governor Aliyu warned. He called on Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, parents, and guardians to support the enforcement of the law, which is intended to make marriage more accessible and affordable for young people in the state.
The move to enforce the law is part of a broader effort to address the social and economic challenges facing young people in Sokoto State. With the rising costs of marriage being a significant deterrent to young people, the government’s initiative aims to promote a more moderate and affordable approach to wedding ceremonies. By engaging with stakeholders and enforcing the law, the government hopes to create a more supportive environment for young people to get married and start families.
The enforcement of the law is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s social and economic development, as it will help to reduce the financial burden on young couples and promote a more stable and secure family environment. As the government moves forward with its plans, it will be important to monitor the effectiveness of the law and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that it is achieving its intended goals.
