Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres struggles blamed on pre season

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe has offered insight into the struggles of Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres this season. Gyokeres, who joined the Gunners from Sporting Lisbon last year, has failed to replicate the form that made him a standout player in Portugal. The Sweden international scored 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting, but has managed only nine goals in 27 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions.

Defoe, speaking on Premier League Productions, suggested that Gyokeres’ disrupted pre-season may be a significant factor in his slow start. “I think that is a big factor,” Defoe said. “I think people don’t realise that when you try to hit the ground running.” Defoe’s comments come as Arsenal continues to lead the Premier League, with Gyokeres struggling to find his footing.

Gyokeres’ impressive record at Sporting Lisbon had raised expectations among Arsenal fans, but his transition to the English Premier League has been challenging. Defoe, who has experience playing in the Premier League, acknowledged Gyokeres’ goal-scoring ability, saying “Gyokeres is a goal scorer.” However, the striker’s inability to adapt to Arsenal’s system and the physical demands of the Premier League has hindered his performance.

Defoe’s assessment highlights the importance of pre-season training in preparing players for the rigors of the Premier League. A strong pre-season can help players build fitness, develop team chemistry, and adjust to new tactics. In contrast, a disrupted pre-season can leave players struggling to catch up, as appears to be the case with Gyokeres.

As the season progresses, Arsenal will be looking for Gyokeres to regain his form and contribute to the team’s success. With the Premier League title race intensifying, Mikel Arteta’s side will need all their players to be performing at their best. Gyokeres’ ability to bounce back from his slow start will be crucial in determining Arsenal’s chances of winning the title.
