Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State is set to rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC) on January 26, 2026, following his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on Friday. This development was announced in a statement by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, in Kano on Sunday.
The move is expected to enhance cooperation between the state government and the Federal Government, leading to accelerated development, improved security, and better service delivery in Kano State. Governor Yusuf’s decision to rejoin the APC is seen as a significant political move, given his previous association with the party. He had initially joined the APC in 2014 and won the party’s primary election for the Kano Central Senatorial seat.
According to the statement, Governor Yusuf will formally register as an APC member alongside 22 state lawmakers, eight federal lawmakers, and 44 local government chairmen. The Governor will also launch the APC e-registration exercise in the state, aimed at expanding the party’s membership and strengthening its presence in Kano.
The defection of Governor Yusuf and other high-ranking officials from the NNPP to the APC is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape in Kano State. The APC, as the ruling party at the federal level, is likely to provide greater support and resources to the state government, enabling it to implement its development agenda more effectively.
The rejoining of Governor Yusuf to the APC is also seen as a strategic move to consolidate power and build alliances ahead of future elections. With the APC’s strong presence in the state, Governor Yusuf’s decision is expected to bolster his political base and enhance his chances of achieving his policy objectives.
As the APC continues to expand its membership and strengthen its presence in Kano State, the party is likely to play a dominant role in shaping the state’s political trajectory. The forthcoming e-registration exercise and the formal registration of new members, including Governor Yusuf, will be closely watched by political observers and analysts, as they seek to understand the implications of this development for the state and the country at large.
