A son of former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Mallam Abba Abubakar, has officially joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Abba registered as a member of the party through the ongoing APC e-registration process at his Gwadabawa Ward in Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State on Monday. He subsequently visited the Adamawa State APC secretariat, where he was received by the state chairman, Idris Shuaibu, and other members of the party’s state Executive Council.
Abba cited the performance of President Bola Tinubu as the reason for his decision to join the APC, describing him as the best person to lead Nigeria at this time and in the near future. This move comes six months after his father, Atiku Abubakar, left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Abba has pledged to support President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, while his father is reportedly seeking to consolidate his position in the ADC and potentially contest for the presidency under the party’s banner in the same year.
The Adamawa State APC chairman, Idris Shuaibu, welcomed Abba to the party, expressing appreciation for his recognition of President Tinubu’s achievements. Shuaibu noted that the party is pleased to have Abba on board, citing the benefits of his experience. Abba’s defection to the APC is seen as a significant development in Nigerian politics, particularly given his family’s background and influence.
The APC has been working to strengthen its position in Adamawa State, and Abba’s membership is expected to contribute to this effort. As the 2027 elections approach, political alignments and realignments are likely to continue, with various parties and candidates jostling for position. Abba’s decision to join the APC and support President Tinubu’s re-election bid may have implications for the political landscape in Adamawa State and beyond. With his father’s plans for the ADC still unfolding, the coming months are likely to be marked by intense political activity and maneuvering.
