Leprosy fight gets boost in Kwara State government campaign

The Kwara State Government has called for collaboration with stakeholders, development partners, and residents to combat leprosy, aiming to eliminate the disease and address associated stigma. This appeal was made on the occasion of World Leprosy Day 2026, marked with activities at the Nigerian Correctional Service in Ilorin.

According to Dr. Taoheed Abdullahi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, the state government is committed to sustained awareness campaigns, early detection, and community engagement to eradicate leprosy. The government is working closely with stakeholders to support the global “Leprosy Zero by 2030” initiative. This year’s theme, “Leprosy is curable, the real challenge is stigma,” focuses on dispelling misconceptions and promoting early diagnosis and treatment.

Leprosy, caused by Mycobacterium leprae, remains a public health concern despite being curable with free multi-drug therapy. Over 200,000 new cases are recorded globally each year, with Africa accounting for a significant proportion. Stigma and misinformation contribute to late presentation and disability, with leprosy often thriving in silence due to fear, misinformation, and discrimination.

The Kwara State Government, in collaboration with the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme, has intensified interventions across the state’s 16 local government areas. Over 500 primary healthcare workers have been trained on early detection, and information materials have been distributed in local languages to improve awareness. Leprosy services have been integrated into routine healthcare outreaches, contributing to a reduction in disability cases among newly diagnosed patients.

The state government’s efforts have been commended by the Officer-in-Charge of the Nigerian Correctional Service, who expressed appreciation for the free medical screening, treatment, and sensitization extended to inmates. The Director of Public Health, Dr. Oluwatosin Fakayode, reiterated the ministry’s commitment to ensuring optimal health for all residents, including inmates.

As part of World Leprosy Day activities, awareness campaigns and active case searches will be conducted in select areas, supported by The Leprosy Mission. World Leprosy Day is observed annually to raise awareness about leprosy, promote early treatment, and eliminate discrimination against affected persons. The Kwara State Government’s efforts to combat leprosy and address associated stigma are crucial in the global drive to eliminate the disease by 2030.
