Nigeria power grid collapses again nationwide

Nigeria’s national electricity grid has collapsed for the second time in less than five days, resulting in a nationwide power outage. The latest incident occurred on Tuesday morning, leaving major districts of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, without electricity. This follows a similar grid collapse last Friday, which was attributed to the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330kV transmission lines and the disconnection of some grid-connected generating units.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) had reported that the previous disturbance occurred at approximately 12:40 hours, resulting in a total outage across the interconnected network. System restoration activities commenced at about 13:15 hours, with electricity supply subsequently restored to several parts of the country, including Abuja, Osogbo, Benin, and Lagos.

On Tuesday, major electricity distribution companies, including Eko Electricity Distribution Company and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, confirmed the nationwide outage following the grid collapse. Eko Electricity Distribution Company informed customers that the power outage occurred at 10:48 a.m. due to a system collapse, while Abuja Electricity Distribution Company regretted the loss of power supply across its franchise area, citing no timeline for restoration.

The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company also issued an advisory, attributing the outage to a grid collapse and appealing to customers to exercise patience as efforts are made to restore power supply. The frequent grid collapses and erratic power supply have disrupted businesses and households across Nigeria, forcing many to rely on alternative sources such as generators and solar power.

The recurring grid collapses have significant implications for the country’s economy and daily life. As the Nigerian government and relevant stakeholders work to address the issue, citizens are left to cope with the consequences of the power outages. The situation highlights the need for a reliable and efficient electricity supply system to support the country’s development and growth. Efforts to restore the grid and prevent future collapses are ongoing, with updates expected as more information becomes available.
