The family of late gospel singer, Omije Ojumi, has addressed the controversy surrounding the cancellation of her burial rites, which were initially proposed by some of her colleagues. In a statement, the family dismissed claims circulating on social media and appealed to the public to ignore misleading online narratives, allowing the late singer to be laid to rest with dignity and peace.
During a service of songs and artistes’ night held on Wednesday, Omije Ojumi’s brother-in-law, Mr. Femi Eretan, explained that the family decided to manage the burial independently after disagreements arose with members of the gospel music community. He refuted reports of internal conflict within the family, stating that they remain united and calm. Eretan noted that “many people are crying more than the bereaved,” emphasizing the family’s resolve to give Omije Ojumi a dignified burial.
Following the singer’s death, the family had contacted relatives from both her paternal and maternal lineages, as well as community elders. Initially, the family head, Mr. Wale Akinaanu, supported the proposal by some artistes to conduct the burial within a week due to his fragile health and the emotional strain of the moment. However, subsequent family discussions led to a change in decision, with the family agreeing that Omije Ojumi deserved a more thoughtful and dignified burial, considering she was survived by a husband and children.
Eretan disclosed that he attempted to contact the artistes’ spokesperson to explain the family’s stance, but the request was declined. He also reached out to an elderly member of the group, who allegedly showed disinterest in the matter. The communication breakdown left the family with no option but to assume full responsibility for the burial arrangements.
The family has denied allegations of publicly soliciting funds for the burial, with Eretan warning of legal action if no evidence is provided to substantiate such claims. Despite the controversy, he expressed appreciation to artistes who honored Omije Ojumi in their personal ways and showed support by attending the service of songs. The service, held in Lagos, was attended by only a few guest artistes, highlighting the impact of the controversy on the burial proceedings.
