Fela Kuti: Yeni Kuti slams contemporary artists comparisons

Yeni Kuti, daughter of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has urged contemporary musicians to cease comparing themselves to her late father, describing such debates as irrelevant to his enduring legacy.

Kuti made the remarks following her family’s acceptance of Fela’s Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2026. She emphasized that Fela’s sustained cultural influence, nearly three decades after his death, is a testament to his unique status. “Fela’s continued relevance speaks for itself,” she stated in an interview with Arise TV.

She advised current artists to respect the achievements of established legends. “Compare yourself with your peers and leave our legends alone. We have legends, let’s respect them,” Kuti said. She argued that the comparison is fundamentally misplaced, noting that drawing parallels between Fela’s historic impact and an active artist’s career overlooks the distinct nature of his contributions.

Her comments follow recent controversy involving Nigerian superstar Wizkid. Wizkid had claimed to be “bigger” than Fela during a public exchange with Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, who criticized comparisons between modern artists and his father.

The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, presented posthumously, recognizes Fela Kuti’s pivotal role in creating the Afrobeat genre and his influential activism. The award ceremony, where the Kuti family received the honor, highlighted the ongoing global recognition of his musical and political legacy.

Kuti’s appeal underscores a recurring discussion within African music about generational artistic comparison. By reinforcing the idea that Fela’s legacy operates on a different plane, she calls for a shift in focus toward peer-level recognition among living artists, rather than contests with iconic figures of the past.

The issue touches on broader questions of how musical legacies are measured and who gets to define artistic greatness across different eras.
