Central Cee Converts to Islam, Changes Name in Livestream

British rapper Central Cee, one of the leading figures in the UK drill scene, has publicly announced his conversion to Islam. The artist, born Oakley Neil Caesar-Su, disclosed the news during a recent livestream, stating he had taken his shahada (declaration of faith) and changed his name accordingly. Friends present in the video offered their congratulations.

Prior to this announcement, Central Cee had not spoken publicly about adhering to a formal religion. The 25-year-old musician was born on 4 June 1998 in London to an English mother and a father of Guyanese and Chinese descent. His parents separated when he was seven, after which he was raised by his mother alongside his two younger brothers in the Shepherd’s Bush area.

Central Cee’s music career began around 2014 with an early appearance on the Fire in the Streets series. His first major feature came in January 2015 on the Ain’t On Nuttin Remix alongside J Hus. He achieved widespread recognition with the release of his breakout single, Day in the Life, on 14 June 2020. Since then, he has solidified his status as a superstar within UK drill and broader British music, earning numerous chart successes and a significant international following.

The announcement marks a personal milestone for the artist. For a global audience, particularly in Africa where his music enjoys considerable popularity, this development highlights the diverse personal journeys of influential cultural figures. It also underscores the growing visibility of Islamic faith among public figures in the contemporary music industry. The long-term impact of this revelation on his artistic output and public persona remains to be seen, but his influence as a trendsetter in urban music is firmly established.
