Senator Adams Oshiomhole has characterized U.S. President Donald Trump’s public recognition of Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, as a significant gesture promoting national unity and interfaith harmony. The senator, representing Edo North on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, made the comments following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday.
According to Oshiomhole, his discussion with the president was cordial and respectful. He used the occasion to highlight Trump’s remarks, noting that the U.S. president publicly acknowledged the First Lady while being aware that President Tinubu is a Muslim. Oshiomhole pointed out that Ms. Tinubu is a Christian pastor, a detail he said underscores Nigeria’s religious diversity.
“The recognition shows Trump understands that the Nigerian President is a Muslim, but he celebrates his Christian wife, who is also a pastor. So there can be no tension between the Qur’an and the Bible,” Oshiomhole stated. He framed the international attention as a model for peaceful coexistence, urging Nigerians to draw inspiration from it.
The senator emphasized that such external validation should prompt internal reflection and action. He called on citizens and leaders to cooperate for the common good, collectively overcome national challenges, and strengthen unity across regional and communal lines. Oshiomhole linked this to governance, stressing that public benefits must be delivered fairly to all citizens to ensure social stability and sustainable development.
Oshiomhole revealed his visit to the villa was primarily to greet President Tinubu and wish him a happy new year, noting it was their first meeting since the start of 2026. During the meeting, he also congratulated the president on the respectful tone of Trump’s comments, describing the First Lady as responsible, respectable, and an inspiration to Nigerians.
He expressed that the positive public reception to the First Lady’s recognition was noteworthy. “The public applause following the recognition reflects the positive impression created. For me as a Nigerian, that is worth celebrating,” Oshiomhole said, concluding with a reiteration of the need for national pride and unity. The commentary from the former national chairman of the APC adds a domestic political dimension to the international diplomatic gesture.
