Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics Open, Russia Neutral

The Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics opened on Friday with a spectacular ceremony at Milan’s San Siro stadium, simultaneously celebrated at venues across the Italian Alps. The event, the most geographically dispersed in Olympic history, highlighted Italy’s cultural heritage while unfolding against a backdrop of geopolitical tension, particularly regarding Russia’s participation under a neutral flag.

The opening ceremony featured iconic Italian opera masters through oversized performer masks and performances by global stars like Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli. A tribute to late designer Giorgio Armani saw models parade in the national colours. In a unique dual-lighting, Olympic cauldrons were ignited both at Milan’s Arch of Peace and in Cortina d’Ampezzo, the alpine resort hosting women’s alpine skiing. IOC President Kirsty Coventry urged athletes to demonstrate courage and resilience, while Italian President Sergio Mattarella officially declared the Games open. For the first time, approximately 2,900 athletes paraded at their respective competition venues to reduce travel.

The otherwise harmonious celebration was briefly disrupted when loud boos greeted U.S. Vice President JD Vance on the stadium screen, though the U.S. team received warm applause during its parade. Separately, the inclusion of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents within the American security detail drew criticism in Italy, despite the government’s assurance they would have no operational authority.

The broadcast of the ceremony in Russia reignited debate over the nation’s Olympic status. Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russian athletes have competed neutrally, without their flag or anthem. While calls grow—from some Russian citizens and international observers—for a return to full participation, the IOC maintains its sanctions due to the ongoing conflict. The presence of a neutral Russian team in Milan-Cortina underscores the Games’ role as a stage for political narratives as much as athletic competition.

The 2026 Winter Olympics will run from February 6 to 22, spreading events across northern Italy. The opening ceremony set a tone of grandeur and unity, yet the reactions in Russia and the security controversies in Italy reflect the complex intersection of sport, diplomacy, and global affairs that continues to surround these Games.
