Chippa United Coach Vilakazi Laments Nwabali Departure (52)

Chippa United head coach Vusumizi Vilakazi has stated that the departure of goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali constitutes a significant setback for the South African Premier Division club. Nwabali confirmed his exit from the Port Elizabeth-based side earlier this week, ending a four-year tenure with the team commonly known as the Chilli Boys.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper’s decision to leave has generated considerable reaction, as he had been a consistent presence in goal for the club since joining in 2020. Vilakazi acknowledged the impact of losing an experienced player, directly referencing Nwabali’s prior accomplishments. “It is definitely a blow for us, considering what Stanley achieved in Morocco,” Vilakazi said in comments reported by Sportswire. The coach’s mention of Morocco alludes to Nwabali’s previous stint with Moroccan club RS Berkane, where he gained continental experience before his move to Chippa United.

Vilakazi also clarified his position regarding the circumstances of the transfer, noting a lack of involvement in the player’s final decision. “Obviously, his decision and everything surrounding it did not involve me,” he stated, indicating the move was initiated by the player or his representatives. This separation suggests the departure was not part of the club’s planned squad restructuring but rather a result of Nwabali’s personal career choices.

Nwabali’s four-year service at Chippa United saw him establish himself as the primary goalkeeper, making over 100 appearances for the club. His consistency and experience provided defensive stability for a team regularly competing in the top flight. His exit now presents a clear challenge for Vilakazi and the club’s management, who must identify a suitable replacement ahead of the new season. The timing of the departure, during the off-season transfer window, allows Chippa United a window to recruit, but losing a long-serving and proven player inevitably creates a gap in squad depth.

The loss of Nwabali removes a familiar and reliable figure from Vilakazi’s squad. As Chippa United prepares for the upcoming campaign, the focus will shift to integrating a new goalkeeper and maintaining defensive solidity. The club’s ability to effectively fill this pivotal position will be a key factor in their performance for the season ahead.
