Katsina Governor Announces Salary Increase, Student Incentives at University Convocation

Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda has approved an upward salary review for both academic and non-academic staff of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU). The announcement was made during the university’s 14th convocation ceremony in Katsina on Saturday, an event where Governor Radda was also conferred with an honorary Doctor of Public Administration degree.

Governor Radda described the salary increment as recognition of the staff’s contributions to the institution’s development and pledged continued state government support to enhance the university’s excellence, discipline, and community service.

Addressing the graduating class, the governor urged them to become ambassadors of integrity and innovation. He announced automatic employment for the overall best graduating student upon completion of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, directing the state Head of Service to fast-track the process. Additionally, he approved a ₦100,000 cash award for the best graduating student in each department, with the overall best graduate set to receive a brand new vehicle.

The governor also confirmed the release of funds for the accreditation of university programmes, ensuring alignment with national and international standards.

The ceremony featured endorsements from the university’s leadership. Chancellor Sen. Ibrahim Idah (Wazirin Katsina) hailed the convocation as a celebration of perseverance. Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council Chairman Sen. Hadi Sirika praised Governor Radda’s leadership and reiterated the council’s commitment to expanding educational access and strengthening research.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shehu Muhammad highlighted UMYU’s significant growth from 1,000 to over 20,000 students, now offering 117 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. He credited the state government for prompt salary payments and sustained support, which has contributed to uninterrupted academic activities, full programme accreditation, and robust research collaborations. Prof. Muhammad congratulated the 2,682 graduates, including 31 First-Class degree holders.

The announcements underscore Governor Radda’s dual focus on staff welfare and student excellence, positioning Umaru Musa Yar’adua University for further development within Nigeria’s higher education landscape.
