Nigerians Must Judge Leaders by Record, Not Foreign Praise

Benue Governorship Aspirant Criticizes First Lady’s Call for Leader Respect

MAKURDI — Andrew Aba, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for governor in Benue State, has publicly challenged a recent appeal by Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, for citizens to stop insulting political leaders.

Mrs. Tinubu’s comments, shared on social media, suggested Nigerians should show more respect to their leaders, noting that such officials often receive warm receptions and accolades during international trips.

In a direct response, Aba argued that diplomatic cordiality abroad should not be confused with genuine domestic approval. He drew a clear distinction between “courtesy” and “respect.”

“Diplomatic courtesy is often driven by protocol and political interest, not by an honest assessment of leadership performance,” Aba stated.

He contended that foreign dignitaries, including U.S. President Donald Trump, are aware of Nigeria’s governance challenges and that ceremonial praise during official visits does not equate to endorsement of a leader’s record at home.

Aba’s critique centered on what he described as a pattern of poor governance. He alleged that many public officials prioritize personal wealth accumulation and overseas investments over addressing the needs of citizens, thereby damaging the nation’s long-term future.

“Instead of solving the problems of the people, many leaders focus on self-aggrandisement,” he said, adding that the consequences of such decisions can persist for decades.

With the next general elections approaching, Aba urged Nigerians to move beyond surface-level gestures. He called on voters to meticulously scrutinize the character, track record, and integrity of those seeking office.

“This is the time for the people to carefully evaluate those they intend to elect, leaders they can truly be proud of, both at home and abroad,” he said.

His appeal frames the electoral choice as one between leaders who serve with integrity and those whose actions, in his view, have exacerbated national challenges. The statement positions voter discernment as critical to Nigeria’s trajectory, emphasizing that leadership decisions made today will define the country’s stability and prosperity for generations to come.

Aba’s remarks highlight a persistent public debate over the nature of respect for authority in Nigeria, pitting diplomatic protocol against demands for accountability and performance-based legitimacy. As political campaigns intensify, his call for evaluating leaders’ “governance record” is likely to resonate within a populace grappling with economic hardship and security concerns.
