Tambuwal Rejects APC Flag in Symbolic ADC Defiance

A video circulating from a recent political gathering captures a symbolic moment of tension between Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC). The footage shows ADC chieftain Aminu Tambuwal, a former governor of Sokoto State, initially refusing to take a seat that was placed directly behind an APC flag.

The incident occurred when former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, who was present at the event, gestured for Tambuwal to occupy the chair, which was positioned beside a large banner bearing the APC insignia. Tambuwal, however, declined and insisted that the flag be removed from the immediate area. Following discussions involving Ganduje and other attendees, Tambuwal ultimately sat down, but only after the flag remained in place.

Tambuwal is a prominent figure within the ADC, a party currently positioning itself to challenge the APC-led government of President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election. His visible reluctance to be photographed in close proximity to the APC emblem underscores the personal and political rivalries that persist ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The ADC, though smaller than the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is actively seeking to consolidate anti-APC sentiment and present itself as a viable alternative. Tambuwal himself has a long political history, having served multiple terms as Sokoto governor and previously holding a key leadership role within the APC before his defection.

This brief interaction, captured on video, highlights the delicate and often theatrical nature of Nigeria’s political engagements, where symbols like party flags carry significant meaning. For an opposition hopeful of unseating the APC, even a momentary seating arrangement can become a statement. The incident suggests that while cross-party dialogue occurs, core allegiances and brand identities remain fiercely guarded.

As political activities intensify toward 2027, such moments will likely be scrutinized for signs of potential alliances or ongoing fractures within the opposition camp. The ADC’s strategy and Tambuwal’s role within it will be closely watched as the race to challenge President Tinubu’s tenure gradually takes shape.
