Staff Welfare Priority for New AE-FUNAI VC Nwachukwu

Professor Daniel Nwachukwu has been appointed as the fourth substantive Vice Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI) in Ebonyi State, Nigeria, with a stated priority on improving staff welfare. His appointment was confirmed by the university’s governing council on December 20, 2025, following a rigorous selection process that involved over 40 senior academics.

Professor Nwachukwu, previously a Professor of Cardiovascular Physiology at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC), brings significant administrative experience to the role, having served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at UNEC since 2023. In his first address, he emphasized a leadership style grounded in integrity and empathy, outlining a vision focused on collective growth. “We have challenges ahead, but I believe that with unity, creativity, and determination, we can turn those challenges into opportunities,” he stated. “Together, we will build the University, embrace innovation, and move the University to greater heights.”

The transition follows a period of notable expansion under the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor Sunday Elom. During his tenure, the university increased its research output, with academics publishing in top-tier journals and securing grants from both local and international funding agencies. Institutional growth was also significant: faculties rose from 11 to 14, academic departments from 41 to 54, and academic programmes from 57 to 64. Student enrollment grew from approximately 9,000 to 14,000.

Professor Nwachukwu’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for AE-FUNAI, a federal university established in 2011 that has rapidly expanded its academic scope and infrastructure. His focus on staff welfare is expected to address concerns around remuneration, working conditions, and professional development, which are critical for retaining talent and sustaining the university’s recent momentum in research and programme diversification.

The governing council’s choice signals an intent to consolidate the institution’s gains while navigating common challenges in Nigeria’s public university system, including funding constraints and infrastructural demands. Observers note that Professor Nwachukwu’s background in medical sciences and prior deputy vice-chancellorship equip him with both academic credibility and administrative insight to steer the university’s next phase.

As the new Vice Chancellor assumes office, the university community and stakeholders will be watching closely how his commitments translate into policy, particularly regarding staff incentives and research investment, which are central to long-term institutional excellence.
