Meta has introduced a new AI-powered feature allowing Facebook users to animate their static profile pictures with preset effects. The tool, rolling out globally, converts still images into short, looping animations akin to GIFs.
Users can select from several preset animations, including “wave,” “heart,” “confetti,” “party hat,” and “natural.” The process involves choosing a photo from the camera roll or existing Facebook albums. Meta recommends using a clear, front-facing photo of a single person without obstructions for optimal results. Once animated, the new profile picture can be shared to the user’s Feed and displayed on their profile. The company stated it will add more animation options throughout the year to align with seasonal events and holidays.
Simultaneously, Meta announced the expansion of its “restyle” feature for Facebook and Instagram Stories. This tool uses AI to transform photos based on preset artistic filters or custom text prompts, allowing users to reimagine everyday snapshots, such as a photo with friends, into illustrated or stylized versions.
These updates represent Meta’s continued integration of generative AI into its core social platforms, shifting from experimental standalone apps to embedded, user-friendly creative tools. While the utility of animated profile pictures may be niche, the moves underscore a broader industry trend of leveraging AI for lightweight, expressive personalization features. The rollout begins immediately on mobile devices, with broader availability planned.
The introduction of these tools reflects Meta’s strategy to enhance user engagement through novel, low-effort creative options, positioning AI as a standard component of social media content creation rather than a specialized product.
