Sterling Joins Feyenoord as Free Agent on Short-Term Deal

Raheem Sterling has signed a short-term contract with Feyenoord after his departure from Chelsea, returning to the Eredivisie for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. The move follows the mutual termination of his contract with the Premier League club in January.

Sterling, 31, joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2022 but struggled for consistent playing time. His exit was formalised in the January transfer window, with two years remaining on his deal. As a free agent, the England international engaged in discussions with several clubs before opting for Feyenoord, who currently sit second in the Dutch league table.

The attacking player’s agreement with Feyenoord runs until the end of the current campaign. He is expected to bolster an already competitive squad managed by former striker Robin van Persie. Sterling brings extensive experience from the Premier League, where he won multiple titles with Manchester City, and a wealth of Champions League and international experience with England.

Sterling highlighted the uniqueness of his free-agent status in deciding his next move. “As a free agent, I’ve had, for the first time in a long time, the opportunity to control the next step in my career,” he stated. “I wanted to take my time to speak with clubs and their head coaches to better understand the role they envisioned for me and ensure that I can add real value in this next chapter.”

Feyenoord’s sporting director confirmed the signing addresses a specific need for an experienced winger capable of contributing immediately in both domestic and European competitions. The club is pursuing a challenge for the Eredivisie title and remains active in the UEFA Europa League.

This transfer represents a significant reboot for Sterling, who hopes to rediscover form and rhythm ahead of a potential role in England’s future plans. For Feyenoord, it is a short-term acquisition with the potential for longer-term impact as they push for silverware. His debut is anticipated in the coming weeks, where he will be integrated into a dynamic attacking unit under van Persie’s guidance.
