Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, has reiterated his administration’s focus on youth development and community cohesion through sports, following the climax of the 2025 Governor’s Cup football finale.
Speaking at the closing ceremony in Katsina, Governor Radda emphasized that empowering young people through structured sporting activities is central to his government’s vision. “Our young people are our future. Providing them with opportunities to showcase their talent, build discipline, and develop teamwork is central to our administration’s vision,” he stated.
The tournament, themed “Governor’s Cup 2025 – Youth, Sports, and Development,” featured local government teams from across the state. In the final match, Malumfashi and Kurfi Local Government Areas contested an intense game that ended 0-0 after regular time. The championship was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout, with Kurfi LGA emerging as champions after Malumfashi missed a decisive kick saved by the Kurfi goalkeeper.
Governor Radda commended the dedication of all participating local governments and praised the youth for their commitment. “I am proud of every player, coach, and local government that contributed to this competition. This is the kind of initiative that nurtures talent and strengthens communities,” he said.
The competition, organized by the Katsina State Football Association under Engr. Surajo Yazeed Abukur, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, has been widely acclaimed as the most successful since the state’s creation. It was revived under Governor Radda’s leadership to reinvigorate grassroots sports and promote youth engagement.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s pledge to support sports development statewide. “We will continue to invest in grassroots sports, encourage more youth participation, and ensure that initiatives like the Governor’s Cup thrive across the state,” he added.
The closing ceremony was attended by top government officials, including Deputy Governor Hon. Faruk Lawal Jobe, Speaker of the State House of Assembly Hon. Nasir Yahaya Daura, Chief of Staff Abdulkadir Mamman Nasir, local government chairmen, State Executive Council members, and a large crowd of football supporters.
The successful revival and execution of the 2025 Governor’s Cup underscore Katsina State’s strategic use of sports as a tool for youth development, social integration, and community building. The administration’s continued backing of such platforms signals a long-term commitment to harnessing the potential of its young population through structured athletic programs.
