The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially scheduled Nigeria’s next presidential election for February 20, 2027. The announcement was made on Friday by INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, during a press briefing in Abuja.
This date was revealed as Professor Amupitan presented a proposed budget of N873.78 billion for the conduct of the 2027 general elections. He submitted the financial proposal on Thursday to the joint Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Electoral Matters at the National Assembly.
The Chairman explained that the commencement of preparations for the 2027 polls is in strict compliance with statutory requirements. These provisions mandate that election funds must be formally appropriated by the National Assembly at least 360 days before the fixed election date. By setting the date now, INEC ensures the necessary legislative and financial processes can be completed within the constitutional timeframe.
The significant budget request outlines the estimated costs for all logistical, operational, and security components of the nationwide election. Its approval by the legislature is a critical next step in the electoral calendar.
The announcement provides immediate clarity for political parties, candidates, and international observers, establishing a firm timeline for the 2027 electoral cycle. It initiates the formal, legally mandated process that will lead to the transfer of executive power, underscoring INEC’s role in ensuring a structured and predictable schedule for Nigeria’s democratic exercise.
