SANDF to Support Police in Gang Violence, Illegal Mining

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is prepared to deploy troops to support police operations against gang violence and illegal mining in Gauteng and the Western Cape, following a directive from President Cyril Ramaphosa. Deputy Defence Minister General Bantu Holomisa confirmed operational preparations are underway, with deployment anticipated within two weeks of receiving formal parliamentary approval.

The presidential directive instructs the Ministers of Police and Defence to finalise a tactical deployment plan, identifying priority areas in the two provinces. Ramaphosa is scheduled to formally inform Parliament on the specific timing, locations, and costs of the operation. He emphasised a dual approach, stating, “We have to act to rid our country of gang violence. At the same time, we are implementing an integrated strategy to address the root causes of crime through coordinated interventions across society.”

Holomisa urged public cooperation, warning that soldiers will be executing a lawful mandate. “No one should point a gun at our soldiers. They will be there to do a job in support of law enforcement,” he said. He also noted the Defence Department’s readiness to assist with broader border security initiatives, though he stressed the necessity of adequate equipment and support for any border deployment.

This planned military assistance represents a significant escalation in the state’s response to persistent security challenges. The SANDF has previously been deployed to support the South African Police Service (SAPS) during periods of civil unrest and in specific high-crime areas, such as parts of the Cape Flats. The current operation is framed as part of a coordinated national effort to stabilise communities and reinforce law enforcement capacity in high-risk zones. The final authorisation from Parliament will pave the way for the first major deployment of troops under this new directive, aiming to bolster police resources in the fight against organised crime and illicit mining activities.
