Rivers Bye-Election February 21: PDP, Labour, ADC Out

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that the forthcoming bye-elections for Khana Constituency 2 and Ahoada East Constituency 2 in the Rivers State House of Assembly will be held as scheduled on February 21. The Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Professor Gabriel Yomere, stated that the elections will proceed despite the absence of candidates from three prominent parties: the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

According to Professor Yomere, who addressed journalists in a briefing, the failure of these parties to field candidates stems from internal and procedural challenges within their respective structures. This development leaves twelve candidates from seven smaller political parties contesting the two vacant seats. The constituencies have lacked representation for over two years. The seat for Khana Constituency 2 became vacant following the death of Dinebari Loolo in September 2023, while Ahoada East Constituency 2 has been empty since Edison Ehie resigned in December 2023 to take up the role of Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Governor.

Professor Yomere reassured residents that INEC has completed all logistical arrangements to ensure a smooth and credible electoral process. He specifically highlighted that all Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs) deployed for the election are permanent INEC staff members, not National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, underscoring the commission’s commitment to maintaining high standards of integrity and professionalism.

The bye-elections represent a critical step towards restoring full legislative representation for the affected communities. With the participation limited to candidates from smaller parties, the outcome will determine which political group secures these key state assembly seats. INEC’s emphasis on using its permanent senior officers for supervisory roles is aimed at bolstering public confidence in the conduct of the polls. The commission urges all stakeholders to continue cooperating to ensure a peaceful and orderly election on February 21.
