Atiku Challenges INEC’s 2027 Election Date Over Ramadan Timing
Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reverse its decision to hold the 2027 general elections on February 20, a date that falls within the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. He described the scheduling as insensitive and indicative of poor judgment.
INEC had previously announced February 20, 2027, as the date for the nationwide polls. According to the Islamic calendar, Ramadan in 2027 is expected to begin around February 7 and conclude around March 8. Atiku argued that conducting a major national exercise during this period of fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection for millions of Nigerian Muslims would likely reduce voter participation and compromise the electoral process’s inclusivity.
In a statement on his verified social media platform, Atiku contended that electoral planning must reflect Nigeria’s diverse socio-religious landscape. He stated that fixing such a critical civic duty during a major religious observance demonstrates a lack of foresight and respect for citizens. He further linked the scheduling issue to broader concerns about INEC’s competence, questioning how the commission could assure credible elections if it mishandles a fundamental aspect like timing.
The former presidential candidate emphasized that inclusive planning is essential in a pluralistic society like Nigeria. He framed the date selection not as a minor administrative detail but as a test of the commission’s capacity for national consideration and effective management.
This public challenge arrives amid perennial discussions about electoral timing in Nigeria, where INEC has historically faced pressure to avoid dates conflicting with major religious festivals, examinations, or economic activities. The commission has not yet responded to Atiku’s call for reconsideration. The debate underscores the persistent challenge of balancing administrative convenience with the religious and cultural realities of Nigeria’s over 200 million citizens in the conduct of elections. The next steps hinge on INEC’s review of the 2027 electoral timetable.
