Kaizer Chiefs urged to appoint Sunday Oliseh as coach

Football pundit Mamadou Gaye has publicly suggested that South African Premier Soccer League club Kaizer Chiefs consider appointing former Nigeria national team manager Sunday Oliseh as their next permanent head coach.

Kaizer Chiefs have operated with an interim technical team since last October, following the departure of Nasreddine Nabi. For the remainder of the 2025-2026 season, the club has tasked coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze with leading the squad. This prolonged period without a substantive manager has become a point of discussion among analysts.

During an appearance on SuperSport’s Soccer Africa, Gaye argued that a club of Kaizer Chiefs’ stature should secure a permanent appointment promptly. “A professional club like Kaizer Chiefs, I expect them to have a permanent coach,” Gaye stated. “All the top clubs in the world can’t go eight months or one year with a caretaker coach.” He specifically mentioned Oliseh as a viable candidate, noting, “Let them take Sunday Oliseh. I’m just throwing out a name; there are many out there.”

Sunday Oliseh is currently a free agent after his most recent managerial stint. The 48-year-old has prior experience managing clubs in Europe, including Belgian side Verviétois, Dutch Eredivisie club Fortuna Sittard, and German regional team SV 19 Straelen. He is perhaps most recognized for his tenure as head coach of the Nigerian national team between 2015 and 2016.

The suggestion highlights the ongoing scrutiny on Kaizer Chiefs’ recruitment strategy as they seek to stabilize their coaching department. The club, one of South Africa’s most supported teams, is yet to announce a long-term appointment for the role vacated late last year. Oliseh’s availability and his mix of international and European club experience present a profile that aligns with the pundit’s call for a swift, decisive hiring process to provide continuity and direction.
