Women Leaders Reshaping African Governance at AU Summit

A high-level dialogue convened on the margins of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa focused on advancing women’s leadership and addressing cross-continental challenges. The event, a Presidential Fireside Conversation titled “Beyond Barriers: Women Leaders Reshaping African Governance,” was co-convened by Namibia through its mission in Addis Ababa on February 13.

The conversation featured President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia and former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. It was moderated by Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, Deputy Executive Director of UN Women, who brought extensive experience in global advocacy for women’s rights.

Discussions centered on the experiences of women who have attained senior leadership roles. Participants emphasized that effective leadership is defined by character, resilience, and service rather than competition, and can be exercised in all sectors of society. President Nandi-Ndaitwah acknowledged that progress in women’s political participation has been supported by male allies who have challenged traditional norms. She also highlighted the critical importance of mentorship and mutual support among women to sustain momentum for future generations.

The dialogue then shifted to pressing continental issues, linking governance to sustainable development. President Nandi-Ndaitwah referenced the African Union’s 2026 theme on water and sanitation, warning that climate change exacerbates scarcity of land and water resources. She noted that in arid regions, shrinking grazing land and competition for water can heighten community tensions and potentially fuel instability, calling for enhanced continental cooperation on shared resource management.

The session concluded with a collective appeal for strengthened solidarity, inclusive leadership models, and intergenerational collaboration. The overarching message was that Africa’s governance structures must reflect the full diversity of its population to achieve lasting peace and sustainable development, with particular attention to the interconnected challenges of gender equality and environmental security.
