Wike Backs Tinubu Candidates Cross-Party in FCT Polls

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced he will actively support only candidates who align with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda in the upcoming FCT Area Council elections on February 21, irrespective of political party.

Speaking at an event in Abuja on Saturday, Wike stated his commitment to ensuring candidates opposed to the president do not win. “I have a duty to support any candidate that supports President Tinubu to win. It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate who is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology on my stand,” he said.

The minister made the declaration during the 60th birthday celebration of Senator Sandy Onor in Abuja. Wike praised Onor as a “credible ally” and “trustworthy friend,” citing the senator’s steadfast loyalty.

The event, organised by friends and associates, served as both a birthday tribute and a thanksgiving for Onor’s career. In a citation, Professor Anthony Eyang highlighted Onor’s journey from Ikom, Cross River State, to the Nigerian Senate, noting his dedication to “learning, leadership, and the advancement of society.”

Several prominent figures attended to honour Onor. Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, representing the occasion’s chairman, described Onor as an “icon” and a leader prepared for greater responsibilities. Former Attorney General Kalu Agabi (SAN) commended Onor’s intellect and bravery, particularly his stance on constitutional matters. A Festschrift—a commemorative academic publication—was unveiled in Onor’s honour, with a reported N50 million donation to support the project. The book was presented by Ambassador Okezie Ikpeazu, a former Abia State governor.

In his response, Senator Onor reflected on attaining 60 years, emphasising the importance of excellence, integrity, and divine guidance. “Everything becomes insignificant if the finger of God is absent in one’s life,” he stated. He thanked his family and supporters for their enduring loyalty.

Wike’s explicit intervention in the non-partisan Area Council polls underscores the continuing influence of national political alliances on local governance in the FCT. His stance signals an intent to mobilise support for Tinubu’s preferred candidates ahead of the February 21 elections.
