PDP Lawmakers Endorse Adeleke’s Osun Re-election Bid

PDP Lawmakers in Osun Endorse Governor Adeleke for Re-Election

A coalition of federal and state legislators from Osun, elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has formally endorsed Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party for a second term in the upcoming August 8 governorship election. The endorsement was announced in a communique following a stakeholders’ meeting in Osogbo, the state capital.

Governor Adeleke, who formerly belonged to the PDP, defected to the Accord Party in December 2025 to pursue his re-election bid. The PDP lawmakers stated their support is grounded in Adeleke’s performance, citing progress in infrastructure, workers’ welfare, healthcare, education, and the promotion of democratic stability. “We unanimously endorse and give our total support to His Excellency, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, for a second term in office in the interest of continuity, stability, and sustained progress for Osun State,” the communique declared.

The statement simultaneously sought to quell speculation about the PDP’s cohesion in the state. It asserted that recent political realignments have not weakened the party’s organisational strength or grassroots support. “The party remains united and firmly established at the National Assembly caucus level, State Assembly level, Executive Council, Local Governments, Wards, and grassroots structures across the state,” it read.

In a move to reinforce internal discipline, the lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of the Osun PDP Chairman, Sunday Bisi, and the entire State Working Committee. The communique explicitly declared only this leadership as legitimate, warning that any alternative groups “do not have the backing of the duly elected National and State Assembly caucus of the party in Osun State.”

The legislators also presented a formal appeal to President Bola Tinubu to resolve a protracted local government crisis in Osun. They claimed the continued withholding of local government allocations, following the suspension of elected council chairmen, is causing severe hardship for civil servants, healthcare workers, teachers, and traditional institutions. The PDP urged the president to “give a directive to the illegal occupants to vacate immediately,” noting the party’s commitment to “the path of peace and the path of law.”

This internal party dynamic is underscored by recent defections; the News Agency of Nigeria reports that five PDP members of the National Assembly from Osun state defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday.

The communique concludes by calling on Osun residents to remain peaceful and steadfast in defending democracy. The PDP lawmakers’ dual message of cross-party support for the governor and reaffirmation of their own party’s structure highlights the complex political calculations ahead of the state election, framing the contest around continuity in governance while managing internal party divisions.
