Enyimba FC Faces Relegation Threat as Fan Pressure Mounts After Latest Loss
Fans of Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) side Enyimba FC have voiced alarm over the club’s deteriorating performance, warning that a continuation of recent poor results could see the former champions embroiled in a relegation battle.
The concernsfollow a 1-0 home defeat to Ikorodu City on Sunday, a result that dropped Enyimba to 14th position in the 20-team league table with 31 points. The loss at their Aba home ground has intensified scrutiny on the club’s management and playing squad.
Supporters have publicly called for decisive action from the club’s leadership, demanding that chairman Kanu Nwankwo and the players improve their output or face removal from the historic club. Many expressed disbelief that Enyimba, a two-time NPFL champion and former CAF Champions League winner, is now struggling to secure points on its own pitch.
The club’s instability has been a recurring theme this season, with four different head coaches already deployed in an attempt to reverse fortunes. In the latest administrative shake-up, Abia State Governor Alex Otti recently appointed Gustave Emmanuel Deutsch as head coach and Daniel Eke as sporting director, interventions aimed at stabilising the team.
Enyimba’s current standing places them just five points above the automatic relegation zone, a stark contrast to their status as one of Nigeria’s most decorated clubs. With the NPFL season progressing, the pressure on both players and the boardroom to deliver results is set to increase. The club’s next fixtures will be critical in determining whether they can distance themselves from the relegation scrap or become entrenched in it.
