APGA Releases List of Cleared Aspirants for Anambra 2026 Local Government Primaries
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has published the list of candidates cleared to contest its internal primaries for the 2026 local government elections in Anambra State. The announcement, made at the party’s state secretariat in Awka on Sunday, confirms that aspirants across all 21 local government areas have successfully completed the party’s screening exercises.
According to a statement signed by Dr. Ejimofor Opara, APGA’s National Publicity Secretary, the clearance follows the conclusion of a verification process conducted strictly in accordance with the party’s established guidelines. The statement affirmed that all candidates met the necessary requirements to proceed to the primaries, which will determine the party’s flag-bearers for the chairmanship positions in each of the state’s councils.
The released list includes notable figures such as Kingsley Ezeagu (Aguata), Ifeanyi Chinweze (Anambra East), Tony Obierika (Anambra West), Paulinus Okafor (Anaocha), ThankGod Anago (Awka North), and Chinedu Okafor (Awka South), with selections confirmed for the remaining local government areas as well.
APGA used the opportunity to reiterate its commitment to a transparent and credible primary selection process. The party urged its members and supporters nationwide to uphold unity and strictly adhere to party rules throughout the electioneering period. This call for discipline comes as political parties intensify preparations for the scheduled state-wide council polls.
The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has set August 29, 2026, as the official date for the local government elections. These polls will see political parties, including the ruling APGA, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), field candidates for the 21 council chairmanship seats and councillorship positions across the state.
Local government elections in Nigeria are critical for grassroots governance, determining leadership for third-tier administrations responsible for primary healthcare, basic education, and community development. APGA’s management of this internal process is being closely observed, given the party’s historical dominance in Anambra State politics. The outcome of the primaries will shape the party’s strategy for retaining control of the state’s local governments in the 2026 polls. All eyes now turn to the conduct of the primaries and the final list of candidates that will be presented to the electorate.
