MasterChef Nigeria Launches with N73m Prize for Home Cooks

MasterChef Nigeria, the first local adaptation of the global culinary franchise, has launched with a record-breaking prize of 73 million naira for the winner. The competition, targeting amateur home cooks across Nigeria, officially opened entries this week, with submissions closing on 27 February 2026.

The series is produced by Primedia Africa under license from Banijay Entertainment, the international rights holder for the MasterChef format. It will air on DStv’s Africa Magic Showcase and Africa Magic Family channels. The deal for the Nigerian version was negotiated by Banijay Rights, the distribution arm of Banijay Entertainment.

Primedia Africa stated that the initiative aims to transform Nigeria’s culinary landscape by uncovering and mentoring talented home cooks. The winner will become the first-ever Nigerian MasterChef and claim the substantial cash prize. Eligibility is restricted to Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above who hold valid passports and have not worked as professional chefs.

The format, created by Franc Roddam and recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s most successful cookery show, has been adapted in over 70 countries. In Nigeria, contestants will face challenges testing originality, technique, flavour, and presentation, preparing dishes that blend traditional Nigerian cuisine with global standards. A panel of esteemed Nigerian chefs, to be announced later, will judge the competition.

“MasterChef Nigeria is a major Nigerian television milestone that will celebrate the country’s exquisite cuisine, innovative food culture, and vibrant culinary traditions,” said Tamara van Eeckhoven, Managing Director at Primedia Africa. “We encourage all home cooks who want to make a name for themselves in the dynamic Nigerian food industry to enter.”

Kemi Omotosho, CEO of Africa Magic, noted the project aligns with the broadcaster’s strategy of investing in premium local content. Sarah Mottershead of Banijay Rights added that the expansion underscores the format’s enduring global appeal and partnership with Primedia.

The launch arrives as Nigeria’s food and entertainment sectors see growing synergy. With over 700 seasons and 16,000 episodes aired worldwide, MasterChef has a proven track record of elevating culinary talent. The Nigerian edition now invites aspiring cooks to compete for a title that promises both national recognition and a significant career springboard. Prospective contestants can apply via the official MasterChef Nigeria website.
