Kano Market Fire: Deputy Senate President Donates N100m for Recovery, Promises Modern Fire Facility
Following a destructive fire at Singer Market in Kano, the Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Barau Jibrin, has donated N100 million to support affected traders and pledged to facilitate a modern fire-control system for the market.
The donation was made during a visit on Sunday, the day after the inferno that engulfed the commercial hub. The fire destroyed goods and property valued at billions of naira, severely impacting hundreds of traders whose livelihoods were lost.
Barau, who represents the Kano North Senatorial District, was received by the chairman of the Singer Market Development Association, Alhaji Junaidu Zakari, along with hundreds of market stakeholders. He stated the financial aid was intended to provide immediate relief and cushion the devastating economic blow.
“This fire outbreak and the enormous losses recorded have affected all of us. It affects the entire Kano people and the country at large,” Barau said. “Commerce is the mainstay of Kano, so we are deeply touched by this incident.”
He further committed to working with relevant authorities to install a modern fire-fighting and detection facility at the market, aiming to prevent future occurrences and improve emergency response capabilities.
Alhaji Zakari expressed gratitude for the visit and support, noting that the market had experienced two major fire incidents recently, with cumulative losses exceeding N5 billion. “We are proud to have you in Kano and appreciate all the support you have given to us,” he said.
Barau was accompanied by a government delegation including the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata; the Kano State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Malam Salisu Sagir Takai; members of the Kano State House of Assembly; and various special advisers and aides.
The incident underscores the vulnerability of key commercial centers in Nigeria’s northern region and highlights efforts by political representatives to address both immediate recovery and long-term infrastructure gaps for disaster prevention. The promised donation and facility are seen as critical steps toward restoring economic activity at one of Kano’s major trading centers.
