Momodu Denies Anti-Obi Stance, Cites Atiku-Obi Alliance

Dele Momodu Rejects Assertions of Opposition to Peter Obi

Dele Momodu, a prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has publicly dismissed any suggestion that he harbours opposition to former presidential candidate Peter Obi. His statement follows a social media exchange where he was challenged to clarify his stance towards the ex-Anambra State governor.

The controversy arose after Momodu posted on X, formerly Twitter, calling on a senior figure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George, to abandon what he termed “anti-Atiku sentiments.” In response, an X user identified as @Blazeregent directly addressed Momodu, writing: “Purge yourself anti-OBI first. You have no moral right to criticize matters like this. If you have the right to be perpetual anti-OBI, so is anyone else to be perpetual anti-ATIKU.”

Momodu swiftly rebutted the implication, asserting a long-standing position of support for Obi. He pointed to the 2022 PDP presidential primary as the basis for his backing, noting that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the party’s flagbearer, selected Obi as his vice-presidential running mate. “I can never be anti-Obi,” Momodu stated. “The first time I supported Obi when Atiku picked him as running mate.”

Furthermore, Momodu rejected narratives of a deep-seated rift between Obi and Atiku, describing their relationship as one of consistent mutual respect. “I’m not aware they are enemies,” he commented. “They always treat each other with mutual respect in private and public.” This observation directly counters speculation that the former running mates have been at odds since their 2023 electoral campaign.

Momodu’s clarification highlights the persistent sensitivities within Nigeria’s opposition political landscape following the 2023 general elections. His dual role as an ADC chieftain and a figure historically aligned with the PDP’s previous presidential ticket places him at an intersection where perceptions of loyalty remain highly scrutinized. The online exchange underscores how social media platforms serve as key arenas for real-time political positioning and reputation management among Nigeria’s elite.

The incident reflects the ongoing public discourse regarding political alliances and personal grievances that may influence future coalition-building. By firmly disavowing any anti-Obi stance, Momodu aims to preserve his neutrality and moral authority when commenting on matters of political unity or discord. His remarks suggest a deliberate effort to frame past support for Atiku’s ticket as distinct from personal animosity toward Obi, a narrative likely intended for both his political peers and the wider electorate.

The significance of this rebuttal lies in its timing, as political stakeholders continue to recalibrate in the post-election period. With the next general elections approaching, public perceptions of inter-party relationships and individual allegiances are being carefully curated. Momodu’s statement contributes to clarifying his personal political compass amid a complex and often fluid Nigerian political environment.
