Former Abia State governor and current senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has announced his intention to actively oppose the re-election bid of incumbent Governor Alex Otti in the 2027 governorship election. This declaration underscores a prioritization of party allegiance over personal rapport, despite Kalu’s acknowledgment of a strong private friendship with the governor.
Kalu, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily. He firmly stated that his political actions will be dictated by his party membership. “I always believe if he wants to be his party, be your party and vote for your party. I’m a member of APC. I will work for APC. He should work for Labour Party,” Kalu said, directly referencing Governor Otti’s affiliation with the Labour Party.
The senator emphasized that political competition should not erode personal bonds, asserting, “We should not lose friendship.” He described his relationship with Otti as solid and maintained that differing political paths are separate from their personal ties. However, he drew a clear line regarding the 2027 electoral contest, noting that the APC will present its own candidate. “I will oppose it because my party will be fielding a candidate. That’s it. It is about the interest of the party,” he stated.
Kalu’s position presents a complex dynamic in Abia State politics. While he pledged to grant Governor Otti space to govern without personal obstruction during his current term, he resolutely framed the future election as a standard partisan contest. His stance highlights the enduring influence of party structure in Nigerian politics, where loyalties are often tested in intra-state rivalries.
The significance of this declaration lies in its crystallization of the opposition landscape ahead of 2027. Kalu, a former two-term governor and influential senator, brings substantial political weight and a network to bear for the APC’s campaign. His public split with Otti, despite their friendship, signals that the gubernatorial race will be formally contested along party lines, potentially shaping coalition strategies and voter alignments in Abia North and across the state. The development sets the stage for a focused partisan battle, with Kalu committing the resources of his political machinery to the APC’s candidate, irrespective of his personal history with the incumbent. The next step will be the APC’s gubernatorial primary process and the formal launch of its campaign against the Labour Party incumbent.
