Former Football Stars Condemn Alleged Racial Abuse Incident Involving Vinicius Junior
Former international footballers Thierry Henry and Micah Richards have publicly condemned Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni following an alleged incident of racial abuse directed at Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior. The reported altercation occurred during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first-leg match between Real Madrid and Benfica in Lisbon on Tuesday, which Real Madrid won 1-0.
The confrontation is said to have taken place on the pitch during the game. According to widespread reports, Prestianni, an 18-year-old Argentine player, was accused by Vinicius Junior of using racially abusive language. The incident has sparked immediate reactions from within the football community.
Speaking as analysts on the CBS Sports Golazo broadcast, Henry and Richards were critical of Prestianni’s alleged actions and subsequent denial. Henry questioned the credibility of any denial from the Benfica player, referencing the visible act of Prestianni covering his nose during a later on-field interaction with Kylian Mbappé. “Let’s see how big a man Prestianni is, tell us what you said,” Henry stated. “You must have said something because you can’t go and tell Mbappé after that ‘I didn’t say anything’. What do you mean you didn’t say anything? So you cover your nose because you have a cold?” Richards directly labeled the alleged behaviour as cowardly, stating succinctly, “He’s a coward.”
In response to the complaint, UEFA has formally opened an investigation into the allegations. The governing body’s disciplinary procedures will examine the evidence, including match officials’ reports and any available broadcast footage, to determine if its regulations have been violated.
This incident adds to the ongoing and persistent issue of racist abuse targeting footballers, with Vinicius Junior having been subjected to similar hatred on multiple previous occasions, primarily in Spain. The swift condemnation from high-profile former players like Henry and Richards underscores the sport’s widespread intolerance for such conduct. The findings of the UEFA investigation will be closely watched, as they could lead to disciplinary sanctions against Prestianni and Benfica, reinforcing the league’s and federation’s stance against discrimination. The case highlights the continued challenge of eradicating racism from football, even at the most elite club level.
