Benue State Begins Demolition of Illegal Structures for Major Road Dualisation Project
The Benue State Government has commenced the removal of illegal structures along the Savannah Roundabout to Government House corridor in Makurdi, the state capital. This action is a critical phase of a major road dualisation project approved under Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration to enhance traffic flow and advance urban infrastructure.
The targeted demolition exercise is part of a broader, lawful initiative to clear encroachments on public land and right-of-way. State officials clarified that the project is not discriminatory but a necessary step for the planned road expansion, which aims to reduce congestion and modernise the city’s transport network.
The government addressed specific public attention on a building in the District 4 area, reportedly owned by federal lawmaker Hon. Dickson Tarkighir. Authorities stated the structure was officially marked for demolition in 2024 due to violations of building regulations and its location within the designated corridor. According to officials, the owner was formally notified over two years ago to voluntarily remove the structure but did not comply.

It warned against the spread of false narratives suggesting political targeting, reiterating that the operation follows a pre-existing, non-partisan plan to reclaim public space for developmental purposes.
