The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced a public holiday and restricted movement to facilitate the upcoming area councils elections in the territory. In a broadcast on Thursday, Minister Wike stated that Friday, February 21, has been declared a work-free day to enable residents to travel to their polling units for Saturday’s local government polls.
The movement restriction will be in effect from 8:00 p.m. on Friday until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Wike explained that both measures were approved by President Bola Tinubu to ensure a conducive environment for the election of chairmen and councilors across the FCT’s six area councils. He directed all security agencies to ensure strict compliance with the orders.
Urging a high voter turnout, the minister called on residents to participate actively in the democratic process. “On Saturday, Feb. 21, we will all have a crucial opportunity to shape the future of our great FCT,” he said. He appealed to citizens to vote with “purpose and responsibility,” conduct themselves orderly, and respect the election outcome. “We must show the world that we are a mature and responsible electorate,” he added.
The minister expressed confidence that the polls would produce quality local leaders committed to the territory’s development, peace, and prosperity. The election is a significant event for the FCT, as area councils are the third tier of government responsible for grassroots administration and service delivery. The successful conduct of these polls is seen as a key step in strengthening local democracy within Nigeria’s capital territory.
