Former Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri has publicly disputed comments made by manager José Mourinho regarding Real Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior’s goal celebration, reigniting a debate on sporting conduct in high-stakes matches.
The incident stems from the first leg of the UEFA Champions League knockout play-off between Benfica and Real Madrid at the Estádio da Luz on Tuesday. Vinícius Júnior opened the scoring five minutes into the second half with a curling finish. His subsequent celebration near the corner flag was met with criticism from Benfica manager Mourinho, who suggested it was provocative towards the home supporters.
The match was further marred by an allegation that Benfica’s Argentine defender Gianluca Prestianni directed a racist insult at Vinícius following the goal, leading the referee to halt play for approximately ten minutes. Mourinho, however, focused his post-match remarks on the celebration itself. In comments reported via Amazon Prime and The Guardian, he stated he had advised Vinícius to simply celebrate and return to the centre circle, while indicating he did not wish to engage in the broader controversy.
Nasri swiftly came to Vinícius’s defence, drawing a parallel with Mourinho’s own celebrated past. Speaking through Trivela and Madrid Xtra, Nasri reminded Mourinho of his exuberant slide on his knees for around 20 metres after a crucial goal for Porto against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the 2003-04 Champions League. “Mourinho ran laps around a pitch… he thought he was Thierry Henry as he celebrated. You don’t have the right to say that,” Nasri asserted.
The 1-0 victory gives Real Madrid a slender advantage ahead of the return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu on February 25. The exchange highlights the ongoing sensitivity around player celebrations and touchline etiquette in elite European football. Both managers’ comments have placed individual expressions of joy under renewed scrutiny ahead of the decisive second match in Madrid.
