Morocco Sentences 19 Soccer Fans for AFCON Final Hooliganism

A Moroccan court has sentenced 19 soccer supporters to prison terms and fines for hooliganism following the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, an incident that strained regional diplomatic relations and caused significant stadium damage.

The verdict, delivered on Thursday, targeted 18 Senegalese nationals and one French citizen convicted of charges including violence and destruction of sporting property. Sentences varied: eleven received one-year jail terms with a 550 USD fine, four were sentenced to six months with a 218 USD fine, and four others received three-month terms with a 130 USD fine. One defendant fainted upon hearing the ruling, while several others initially refused to leave the courtroom. Legal representatives for the convicted plan to appeal, describing the penalties as overly harsh.

The convictions stem from events on January 28 in Rabat, where Morocco hosted Senegal in the AFCON championship match. The game, which Senegal won 1-0, was disrupted in its final minutes after a contentious penalty was awarded to the host nation.抗议的塞内加尔球迷冲入球场,向场地投掷椅子并与安保人员发生冲突,导致球场设施严重损坏,总损失超过47.6万美元。塞内加尔球员一度离场以示抗议。

The legal proceedings attracted diplomatic attention, with officials from Senegal and France observing the hearing. The incident prompted high-level governmental engagement to prevent long-term damage to bilateral ties. In a significant de-escalation move, Senegal’s Prime Minister visited Morocco shortly after the final to sign bilateral investment agreements, signaling a desire to compartmentalize the sports violence from broader international relations.

The case highlights the intense pressures surrounding major international sporting events in Africa and the severe legal consequences for public disorder. While the appeal process is expected to prolong the legal saga, the swift diplomatic outreach underscores the importance both nations place on maintaining stable relations beyond the sporting rivalry. The sentencing serves as a precedent for fan conduct at future continental tournaments, emphasizing that criminal actions will be prosecuted fully under Moroccan law.
