Kanjama Elected LSK President Amid Kenya’s High-Stakes Elections

Charles Kanjama has been elected the 52nd President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), securing a decisive victory in an election held on Thursday. Kanjama received 3,728 votes, defeating former Vice President Peter Wanyama, who garnered 2,616 votes, and outgoing Vice President Mwaura Kabata, who finished third with 2,086 votes.

Outgoing President Faith Odhiambo congratulated Kanjama on his “resounding victory,” expressing full confidence in his ability to lead the influential legal body during a critical period for the nation. She highlighted the LSK’s vital watchdog role as Kenya approaches a high-stakes election cycle, stating that Kenyans would look to the Society for principled leadership on constitutionalism and the rule of law. Odhiambo described Kanjama as a “worthy torchbearer,” citing his record of service and contributions to governance.

In his concession, Kabata congratulated Kanjama and pledged support for the new leadership, noting his campaign engaged over 2,000 colleagues. He described the political moment as critical and wished the incoming council success. The contest attracted significant attention within the legal fraternity, underscoring the LSK’s growing prominence in national legal and governance discourse.

Kanjama succeeds Odhiambo, who led the Society through a period of assertive advocacy on governance, human rights, and constitutional compliance, often engaging in high-profile clashes with state agencies. Her tenure followed that of Eric Theuri.

Kanjama assumes office as the LSK is expected to maintain its central role in safeguarding civil liberties and holding executive power to account in the lead-up to the next General Election. The transition marks a continuation of the Society’s active engagement in Kenya’s democratic processes.
