Kompany slams Mourinho’s Vinicius racist celebration mistake

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has sharply criticised his Benfica counterpart José Mourinho over comments following an alleged racist incident involving Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior. Kompany described Mourinho’s reaction as a “huge mistake” in leadership, elevating a disciplinary matter into a broader debate on conduct in European football.

The incident occurred during the Champions League play-off second leg between Benfica and Real Madrid in Lisbon earlier this week. Vinícius, who scored the match’s only goal, claimed he was subjected to racial abuse by a young Benfica player, Gianluca Prestianni, moments after his celebration. The allegation has prompted investigation by UEFA.

Following the match, Mourinho, who was not in charge of Benfica at the time but was present as a television analyst, suggested Vinícius had provoked the home supporters with an exaggerated celebration. “The player scored a goal and started to make a circus in front of our fans,” Mourinho stated, implying the player’s actions were inflammatory.

Kompany, addressing the matter at a press conference, directly challenged Mourinho’s perspective. “You have the leader of an organisation, José Mourinho, who attacks the character of Vinícius Júnior by bringing in the type of celebration to discredit what Vinícius is doing in this moment,” Kompany said. “In terms of leadership, it’s a huge mistake and something we should not accept.”

This exchange highlights the intense scrutiny surrounding Vinícius, who has been the target of racial abuse in Spanish football on multiple occasions. The Brazilian winger has frequently spoken out against racism, making his reaction to any provocation a sensitive subject. Kompany’s intervention frames the issue not as a dispute between players, but as a failure of senior figures to support victims of discrimination.

Mourinho’s comments are also viewed through the lens of his long and often contentious managerial career, marked by battles with officials, the media, and rival clubs. His suggestion that a player’s celebration justified abuse contradicts UEFA’s zero-tolerance stance on racism, which holds that no provocation excuses discriminatory behaviour.

The controversy now moves to UEFA’s disciplinary committees, which will review the allegation against Prestianni and potentially Mourinho’s public statements. Both Real Madrid and Vinícius have reiterated their commitment to pursuing the racism claim. For Kompany, the episode underscores a fundamental responsibility for those in leadership positions to unequivocally reject racism, irrespective of other contextual factors. The outcome of this case will signal how European football’s governing body intends to handle the intersection of alleged on-field abuse and off-field commentary from prominent figures.
