Eric Chelle’s future as Super Eagles head coach remains uncertain following Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, with reported demands creating a standoff with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Chelle, appointed in 2023, guided Nigeria to the bronze medal at the tournament. Since its conclusion in January, widespread calls from players, fans, and analysts have urged the NFF to secure his long-term tenure. The federation has consistently stated that the Malian coach’s current contract extends to 2027.
However, reports indicate Chelle has submitted 19 conditions for an extension, including a 100% salary increase for himself and his staff. This comes after he was linked with the Tunisia national team before AFCON 2025 and, more recently, with Olympique de Marseille following Roberto De Zerbi’s resignation, though Marseille subsequently appointed Habib Beye.
Football analyst Clinton McDubus suggested Chelle is leveraging the team’s AFCON performance to seek improved working conditions. “He knows he has a lot to offer Nigerian football and that everyone can now see that,” McDubus said, noting the coach’s elevated profile gives him significant bargaining power. He emphasized that the demands extend beyond personal gain, targeting structural reforms for Nigerian football.
The NFF has publicly denied receiving formal demands, though Chelle’s recent change of agent is viewed as a sign he may still consider alternative offers. McDubus argued that accepting the core demands is crucial for the nation’s football development. “If they refuse, then it becomes clear… they don’t want our progress as a footballing nation,” he stated.
The situation places the NFF under scrutiny regarding its commitment to long-term strategy. A decision on Chelle’s terms could significantly influence the direction of the Super Eagles program and Nigeria’s broader football infrastructure. The federation is expected to engage in further discussions with the coach as both sides weigh the implications for the team’s future.
