INEC Guarantees 8:30am Start for FCT Council Election

INEC Guarantees Punctual Start for FCT Area Council Election

By [Your Name/Media Talk Africa]

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured voters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that the Area Council election, scheduled for February 21, 2026, will commence promptly at 8:30 a.m. as officially stated.

The assurance was delivered by Samuel Bassey, Head of Department for Voter Education and Publicity at the FCT INEC office, during an interview on Arise Television on Friday. Bassey stated explicitly, “I guarantee and assure FCT voters that the polls will commence at 8:30am as stipulated.”

He detailed that logistical preparations are complete, with all election materials and personnel already deployed to polling units overnight. This proactive measure is designed to prevent the common challenge of late commencement, which Bassey noted has been “significantly addressed, if not eliminated” by the commission’s new initiatives.

The FCT Area Council election will see residents vote for chairmen and councilors across the six area councils of the territory. INEC has repeatedly expressed its readiness to conduct a free, fair, and credible poll. The commission’s public pledge on timing underscores a broader focus on operational efficiency and adherence to electoral guidelines.

Punctual opening of polling stations is a critical indicator of electoral management and voter confidence. Delays often lead to voter frustration, reduced turnout, and opportunities for malpractice. By guaranteeing an on-time start, INEC aims to enhance the transparency and legitimacy of the electoral process from the very first hour.

Voters in the FCT are expected to proceed to their designated polling units from 8:30 a.m. onwards. The commission’s actions reflect a intensified focus on the logistical execution of elections, complementing its wider mandate to ensure a seamless voting experience. The successful and timely conduct of this election will be an early test of INEC’s preparedness for larger national electoral exercises in the coming years.
