Sagrada Familia Cross Completes Tower at 172.5 Meters

After 144 years of construction, Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia has reached its maximum height of 172.5 meters with the installation of the final piece—a monumental cross—atop the central Tower of Jesus Christ on Friday. This milestone completes the vertical outline originally envisioned by architect Antoni Gaudi, marking a pivotal moment for the renowned basilica.

The cross, including its upper arm, was lifted into place using cranes and secured by workers high above the city. Video footage captured the gleaming structure being guided into position, with residents and visitors gathering below to applaud the achievement. Weighing several tons, the cross features four arms designed for omnidirectional recognition, serving as the defining architectural feature of the tower and further dominating Barcelona’s skyline.

Construction of the Sagrada Familia commenced in 1882 under Gaudi’s direction, blending Gothic and Art Nouveau styles. Progress slowed after his death in 1926, interrupted by funding shortages, political instability, and war damage, particularly during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), which destroyed original models and plans. Subsequent architects relied on surviving fragments, historical photographs, and digital modeling to continue the work, turning the project into one of the longest-running architectural endeavors in modern history.

Head architect Jordi Fauli confirmed the successful installation, stating, “Today was a day we had been eagerly awaiting. Everything has gone very well.” The extended timeline reflects intricate craftsmanship, evolving building technologies, and historical disruptions. With the central tower now complete, the basilica stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a global symbol of artistic ambition, though construction continues on other planned towers and facades. This achievement underscores the enduring legacy of Gaudi’s vision and the collaborative effort spanning generations to realize it.
