Troops Foil Coordinated Boko Haram Attacks in Nigeria’s North-East, Kill 29 Insurgents
Military forces under Operation Hadin Kai repelled coordinated assaults by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno and Yobe states, neutralising at least 29 terrorists in intense firefights, security authorities reported on Sunday.
The attacks, which targeted forward military positions and susceptible communities simultaneously across both states, were launched under the cover of darkness. According to military sources, troops acted swiftly on actionable intelligence, mounting a robust defence that prevented the insurgents from overrunning any locations.
In the subsequent gun battles, soldiers utilised coordinated ground manoeuvres and superior firepower to engage the attackers. Beyond the confirmed fatalities, several insurgents are believed to have escaped with gunshot wounds. Troops also recovered a significant cache of armaments from the assault sites, including assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, and materials for improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which officials stated were intended for future operations.
“The swift response of our troops frustrated their plans and prevented potential casualties among civilians,” a military source involved in the operation stated. The seizure of these weapons is assessed to materially degrade the insurgents’ operational capability in the affected areas. Clearance operations are currently underway in surrounding terrain to pursue fleeing fighters and dismantle potential hideouts.
These foiled incursions occur amid an intensified national campaign by Operation Hadin Kai, the principal counter-insurgency command in Nigeria’s North-East. The sustained offensive has focused on dismantling enclaves of both Boko Haram and its splinter faction, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), particularly in the Lake Chad basin and the Sambisa Forest region.
Security analysts note that the coordinated nature of the recent attacks indicates a deliberate attempt by the insurgents to regain tactical initiative despite persistent military pressure. While the successful defence underscores the effectiveness of current defensive protocols, it also highlights the persistent threat in rural areas.
Residents in parts of Borno and Yobe have expressed cautious relief, noting an increased military presence through patrols and clearance missions aimed at restoring stability. Military authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining the offensive until all insurgent groups are neutralised. They once again urged local communities to provide timely and accurate intelligence to security agencies, emphasising that public cooperation remains a critical component of the counter-insurgency strategy.
