Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally inaugurated its policy think tank, The Progressive Institute (TGI), at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja. The launch, confirmed in a statement on the party’s verified X account on Monday, follows the institute’s initial unveiling in September 2024.
The institute will operate under the leadership of APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, who will chair its Governing Council. According to the party statement, TGI is mandated to drive policy research and publications, and to organise national and international conferences, seminars, and training programmes.
A core function of the institute will be to build leadership and institutional capacity within the APC. It is also tasked with strengthening the party’s ideological foundations, enhancing governance standards, and promoting democratic culture. Furthermore, TGI is designated to serve as the institutional memory of the APC, systematically documenting and preserving the party’s history, strategies, and operational knowledge.
The establishment of TGI represents a significant step in the APC’s efforts to institutionalise its policy framework and organisational coherence. As Nigeria’s dominant political party since its formation in 2015 through a merger of multiple opposition groups, the APC’s move to create a dedicated think tank underscores a strategic focus on long-term ideological development and analytical capacity.
For an international audience, the initiative highlights a common practice among major political parties globally to formalise research and training arms. The institute’s work is expected to influence the party’s manifestos and public policy positions, potentially shaping national discourse ahead of future electoral cycles. Its success in fulfilling its mandates of research, training, and archival preservation will be closely watched as a measure of the APC’s commitment to systematic party development and governance preparation.
