ADC Condemns Edo Attack, Accuses APC of Political Terrorism

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned a shooting incident in Edo State, describing it as a targeted attack and attempted assassination against its leadership. The party alleges the violence is part of a broader pattern of intimidation directed at opposition figures by Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (ARC).

According to a statement by ADC National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the attack focused on former governor John Oyegun, party leader Peter Obi, and Olumide Akpata, a recentADC recruit. The party asserts the shooting was not random but a deliberate act intended to silence political dissent.

The ADC directly accused the APC of fostering a climate of political violence. It further raised concerns about recent statements attributed to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, alleging he suggested he could not guarantee Peter Obi’s safety in the state and claimed the ADC sponsors cult groups. The party characterized such rhetoric as reckless and capable of escalating tensions.

“Using gunfire against politicians in a democratic system is unacceptable and dangerous,” the statement read, emphasizing that no political party or governor owns any Nigerian state. The ADC affirmed that all citizens retain the right to free movement, expression, and political participation without fear.

The party warned it would hold accountable any individuals or groups responsible for harm against its members, citing rising hostility and threats. It announced it is compiling documentation of alleged “acts of terrorism” by the ruling APC and plans to submit these reports to international diplomatic missions and the ECOWAS Court of Human Rights.

Despite the incident, the ADC declared it would not be intimidated. “Regardless of the level of intimidation, ADC will not bow to terror and will take all lawful means to protect its members and facilities across the country,” the statement insisted, urging members to remain vigilant and continue lawful political activities.

The incident highlights persistent tensions in Nigeria’s political landscape, where opposition parties frequently raise concerns about security and freedom of assembly. The ADC’s allegations point to a deepening rift between the ruling party and opposition groups ahead of future electoral cycles. The party’s decision to involve international bodies underscores the seriousness with which it views the threat to democratic processes. As political campaigns intensify, the safety of candidates and supporters remains a critical concern for Nigeria’s democratic stability.
